Levi found a safe home at the Luv Shack after we were called by the Tolleson Police. He was the victim of a broken, abusive home and had received only minimal and sporadic care over a period of seven months. We believe that he hadn't been out of his stall for that entire time. He had terrible rot over his back and withers and, as you can see, hadn't been fed for a while. We think that he is Anglo: Half Arab, half Thoroughbred. Levi has two sponsors! Grandma Kate is sponsoring his food costs. Debbie comes several times a week and pampers him. She will sponsor his training and hopes to adopt him when he is completely healthy. This story is bound to have a very happy ending!

Maverick came to us in a "trade" with Dr. Deborah Wilson and the Circle L Ranch.  We were able to bring Mordecai and Rosalita to her to live out their lives in her Sanctuary and in return we took  Maverick and Kachina home with us. Maverick is the 2 yr old colt of a PMU rescued mare.  He is a really beautiful bay quarterhorse and will make a great ride for someone who is willing to wait for him to grow up!

Hank is A Belgian Draft horse that we brought over from a neighboring ranch where he was kept in a stall. He had been rescued from the kill buyer a year ago but really needed a home with more space to move around. So, he is now the BIG MAN at the Luv Shack. He is somewhat fearful of people but warms up pretty quickly with love and patience. He will need a home with lots of room to run.

Welcome Scout!

Finally a baby boy. We thought that Dancer would give birth to a yearling. But in her own time, she gave us the most precious little paint. He gets cuter every day. He was named, after very careful consideration, by Marlene and Carol who tirelessly watched over and fed the horses from the Mesa rescue until we were able to remove them from their owner. We are sure that his father is a tall paint that we called Chief.

Madeline, Addy, Jet and Lucy were all part of a rescue of fourteen horses from a feedlot in Fallon, Nevada. The Luv Shack agreed to take four of the horses to find them loving, forever homes. First, we had to unload all fourteen to find and catch the ones that were ours. Then the others had to be reloaded. As you can see, it wasn't a simple process! Jet has since found a new adoptive home and Addy and Lucy are currently being fostered. Madeline is now part of our Luv Shack Challenge and has an adoption pending.

Maddy and Jet have been adopted. Addy and Lucy are being fostered!

Dancer is a five or six year old mustang pony. She was part of a rescue of five horses in Mesa. There were actually nine horses on the property but we were only able to get five away from the owner. They were being fed once a week and had no medical care or hoof care. The mares were kept with stallions and were therefore all pregnant and breeding continually. There were severe untreated illnesses and injuries. None had been handled so transporting them was an ordeal. Dancer had been abused and shows alot of mistrust of humans but she is coming along. She does allow us to touch her on her front end and Joey has been able to trim her feet. She was indeed pregnant and we are expecting a new baby in December!

Jan. 3rd: Still no baby!!!

Jan. 26th: Nope, not yet!

February 6th: Are you kidding me? Still no baby!!! But her teats are filling up so it should be any day now. Really.

Vibrato is Dancers colt. He is a very handsome Mustang pony and we think that he is about two years old. He was a stallion when we found him and he was very aggressive. Joey had him gelded before we brought him to the Luv Shack and after a couple of months he calmed down quite a bit. He is learning to like being touched and is no longer the least bit aggressive. He has turned out to be very playful and torments all of the other geldings! He found a friend in Bobbie who brings him her homemade horse cookies and works on his manners.

Bella came to us in March, rescued from slaughter, starved and pregnant. Four months later she gave birth to a perfect baby girl. We named her Izzy and she is the light of the Luv Shack. You can see why!

Bella has been adopted by Joan and Warren.

Deputy arrived a week after Izzy was born. His mother was sent to slaughter by the local "kill buyer" and Joey was asked to rescue him by a sherriff's deputy.  He is now Izzy's best friend. If you look carefully, you can see him sneaking a drink from Bella! The pictures directly above are recent and you can see that he has gone from homely to beautiful!!

Deputy has been adopted!!!

This is Milagro or Milo. His name means miracle in Spanish and boy has he earned it! He was part of the Thoroughbred rescue and was not in any shape to adopt out. He was really underweight and his hooves were a mess. His immune system was really compromised and there were a few times when we thought that we might lose him. He is also an orphan and was immediately befriended by our donkey, Elijah. Here he is seen recently, with his new friend Charlie. You can see how much he has grown! He is finally playing with the other babies and it looks like he will make it! He is being sponsored by Libby who hopes to adopt him when he gets a completely clean bill of health. She takes such loving care of him that it shouldn't be long!

This is Elijah also known as Donqui Xote. Joey found him at the "kill buyer" and he was destined for the slaughter truck. We can't imagine why because we think that he is the best donkey EVER. He was a nanny to Milo for his first couple of months but now that Milo is healthy, Donqui divides his time between games of chase with the three little ones and hanging out with his head between Big's back legs.

This is Magnum. He was rescued along with his best friend, Sage, from a property a few blocks from our ranch. Both had been severely neglected and starved. Sage was in such terrible shape that we had to put her down as soon as we got her to our property. Magnum was a few hundred pounds underweight and needed hoof care but was otherwise in fair shape. He eats all day and is receiving supplements and we believe that he will rebound quickly. He is such a sweet boy and already has many admirers at the Luv Shack. He is also shown here at the Carefree Christmas Festival admiring a lady's feather hat! He is a wonderful trail horse and would be great for a child or beginning rider.

Update: Magnum has been adopted!

This is Mr. Big also called just "Big". He is a beautiful Thoroughbred that we rescued from a broken home. We are told that he used to carry a young boy on his back and we know by his tatooed lip that he was once on the racetrack. He has Laminitis in his front foot but with proper nutrition and hoof care, he should be healthy in several months. This big boy is a true gentle giant! As of December he has been ridden locally with boots to protect his front feet. His hooves are growing in well and we are still confident that he will be sound. Big is being sponsored by Kathy who is learning to take care of his needs and gives him tons of LUV.
