Thoroughbred Adopt-a-thon
Adopt-a-thon September 13, 2008

Thank you to the Community and to our Volunteers for an amazing event!

As of Wednesday, we have found loving homes for all of the horses that were available at the Adopt-a-thon. We still have three stallions, one stud colt and a three year old filly that we weren't able to bring to the event. We continue to receive calls and hope to find homes for them too.
Again, we have to thank all of the people who made this such a huge success. There were so many who volunteered their time, energy, and expertise to our cause. We received donations of hay, grain, supplies and money. Our neighbors were incredible. The horse community rallied behind us and the media put us in the spotlight. We could not have pulled this off without each and every one of you. Thank you and bless you all for caring about the horses.

On Saturday September 13th, at 9:00 AM, The Luv Shack will hold an adoption event to try and find permanent, loving homes for these beautiful Thoroughbreds. There will be a $400.00 adoption fee for each horse, but in the case of the pregnant mares, the adopter will actually get two for the price of one! No extra charge for the babies! There will be an application and approval process before any horses are taken home. The Luv Shack is still in need of donations to cover the costs associated with a rescue of this size. Most urgent is cash donations to help with the medical and hoof care.

In the last several days, The Luv Shack Ranch has been able to transport twelve of the original twenty six Rio Verde Thoroughbreds to a new location. Still left behind are three stallions and one stud colt that will need to be gelded before they are moved, as well as a pregnant mare that was too traumatized to load into a trailer. The rest of the original twenty six will be temporarily boarded at the Cave Creek location. At this time, all of the horses are being well fed and are receiving much needed hoof care and medical evaluation and attention.

It is important to acknowledge that this was only possible with the tremendous support of the local horse community. We received numerous emails and phone calls offering all kinds of help. The difficult and often dangerous two day round up and transport of the horses was led by Calvin Long, a Luv Shack neighbor with years of horse experience. Additional trucks and trailers were provided thanks to an email sent by the Rio Verde Horseman's Association. Another Luv Shack neighbor, Wes Smith is generously allowing the horses to be kept in a large roping arena on his property, the D Double R Ranch. Darrah Waters has offered to be responsible for the feeding and she has also created and posted a video on You Tube to help solicit homes and support for the horses. As a result of many other emails forwarded from one horse lover to the next, donations of feed have been delivered and further help has been offered. Countless hours have been logged by The Luv Shack Volunteers and by our many new friends and supporters.
